USAT Sanctioned Race

Thank you for registering for the second race in the 2014 Kids Tri for Kids Triathlon
If you know of anyone that is interested in trying a youth triathlon or duathlon
for the first time, this event would be a great opportunity for them to get their feet wet.
Below, you will find important information pertaining to the race. Please take the time
to review this information as it will make your experience at the event much more

USAT Membership
All athletes need to be registered through USA Triathlon. Youth annual memberships
are $15.00 for the entire year. Please visit this website to purchase your membership. After you complete this process, you will be asked to print your temporary membership
card. Please do so and bring this card with you to race registration.

USAT Race Age
VERY IMPORTANT! Please note that your athlete’s race age is the age that they will be on
December 31st, 2014. As an example: If the current age of your athlete is 10 on race day and
they have already celebrated their birthday in 2014, they will race as a 10 year old athlete. If
they are turning 11 after our race, they will race as an 11 year old.


Paid parking will be available in the parking garage attached to the Natatorium. If you
decide to park in a surface lot, you will run the risk of getting a ticket.


Packet Pick-up & Registration
Your race packet will include your t-shirt, race maps, race number, and sponsor
information. Packet Pick Up will be on Saturday, June 7th at the Runner’s forum in
Carmel from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Packet pick up will also be available at the IU
Natatorium beginning at 7:30am on Sunday, June 8th. Day-of registration will open at
7:30am on the IU Natatorium’s main concourse. When the athlete receives their race
number, we will also write their number on their arms and legs with a sharpie.


Prerace Meeting
A mandatory race meeting for all participants and a parent/guardian will take place at
9:00 am on the pool deck. We ask that the parents sit in the seating gallery during this
meeting with the athletes on deck.


Race Start
The first wave of athletes will start at 9:30 am. Wave starts will not be decided upon
until after registration closes and will be announced on race morning.


Spectator Information
We ask that the parents watch the swimming portion of the triathlon from the West
Seating Gallery. You can easily access New York Street from the Natatorium to watch
the bike course for your athlete. Due to the Indy 11 set up, the finish area will be
located in the small parking lot just south. Please access this area by entering through
the gate off of University Blvd. The awards ceremony will take place in the Natatorium
after the race has concluded.

Swim Information
The course
The swim will begin at either the North or South ends based off of the number of
entries. Swimmers ages 7-10 will complete one lap (100 meters). Ages 11-14 will
complete two laps (200 meters). The start will be an in-water start, either hanging onto
the side or treading water. Your race time will start on the Starter’s signal. Athletes will
start and finish the swim at the same end of the competition pool. The swim course
map will be provided at registration.


Our Natatorium lifeguards will be positioned in the water as well as around the
perimeter of the pool during the duration of the swim portion of the triathlon.


Race Attire
It’s fastest to minimize clothing changes. Try to wear something in the swim that you
could bike and run in. For boys, it’s a swim suit or bike shorts. You will need to add a
shirt with race number on it as you get on the bike. For girls, you may wear a swim
suit, bike shorts and swim suit / appropriate bra / other top for the swim. You may
continue the race in this outfit or add clothing as necessary for the bike.


Strokes for the Swim
You can use any stroke you like during the swim. Freestyle or crawl is the most
commonly used stroke, though it is not required.


Resting during the Swim
Lane lines will be on the outside of the race course if you feel you need to rest.
Swimmers can use the wall at each end to rest, however they cannot use it to propel
themselves forward. Lifeguards will also be in the water to assist with any problems.


Passing during the Swim
Yes. The lanes in the swim are fairly big, and there is plenty of room to pass. If
possible tap the swimmer ahead of you on the toes to let them know you are going to
pass. Don’t try to pass as you approach the turns


Fins during the Swim
No fins are allowed during the swim.


No wetsuits are allowed during the swim.


No flip turns are allowed during the swim.


Swim Caps
All participants (male and female) are required to wear swim caps. Swim caps will be
provided for you in your race packet.


Exiting the pool
If you need assistance getting out, there will be volunteers to help. There will be no
ladders at the pool exit.


Transition Information
Transition area
Two transition areas will be provided for the athletes. One inside the Natatorium and
one on the practice field adjacent to the Natatorium. The transition area maps will be
provided at registration.


Changing after the swim
A transition area will be located on the west side of the pool so athletes can put on their
shoes, shirt, bib number and helmet before they make their way to the bike transition


Changing area between Swim and Bike
Locker rooms are available if the athlete would like to completely change. Please note:
any time spent changing is counted towards the total time.


Transition Time
This time will be counted towards your overall race time, though there is no time limit.


Bike Information
Bike Course
Once on the bike, you will utilize New York Street between White River Boulevard and
West Street. The 7 – 10 year olds will complete one loop (2 miles) while the 11 – 14
year olds will complete 2 loops (4 miles). Athletes will be asked to walk/run with their
bike out of the transition area to the bike mounting area on New York Street. After the
athlete has completed the bike leg of the triathlon, they will then dismount their bike on
New York Street and walk/run it back into the bike to run transition area. The bike
course map will be provided at registration.


Bike Safety
The bike course is a closed course in that no vehicles will be traveling on New York
Street during the bike portion of the race. IUPUI Police officers will be stationed at the
major intersections to let traffic cross only when it is safe for the athletes. Volunteers
will be stationed at the other intersections to maintain a clear course.


YES!!!! This rule is strictly enforced by both the USAT and the race organizers. You will
be disqualified if you do not wear a helmet. You MUST wear a helmet and the
chinstrap must be buckled ANYTIME you are on your bike. This includes before, during
and after the race. If you are riding your bike from your car to the transition area, you
MUST have your helmet on and buckled. Same for after the race. When you arrive in
the transition area after the swim to start the bike portion of the race, it’s
recommended that the first thing you do is put on your helmet. You are responsible for
providing your own helmet. Once again, you will be disqualified if you do not wear a helmet!


“Fat-Tire Bikes”
Yes, fat tire bikes are allowed at this race.


Bike racks will be provided. Athletes will have the option of using a bike rack or a

There will be no bike support on the bike course. If an athlete encounters a flat tire,
they will need to dismount their bike and run with their bike for the remainder of the


Run Information
Run Course
The run segment will take place on the grounds of the Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer
Stadium. The 7 – 10 year olds will run a ½ mile while the 11-14 year olds will run a full
mile. A run course map will be provided at registration.


Walking/Resting on the run course
Athlete may walk or stop to rest on the run course, but again this time will be counted
towards their final time.


Course Marking/Volunteers
The run course will be marked so the athletes will know what direction to head, but we
will also have volunteers out on the course to help along the way.


Duathlon, new this year!
The duathlon will start with a shorter run, quarter mile, before transitioning into the
bike. The bike distance will be the same as the triathlon, as well as the second run.
Short course duathlon = quarter mile run, two mile bike and half mile run.
Long course duathlon = three tenths of a mile run, four mile bike and one mile run.


Additional Information
Water/Aid Stations
Water/ aid stations will be located at the bike transition area, half-way through the run,
and at the finish. There will be certified First-Aid/CPR and EMS personnel on site during
the race.


Triathlons are conducted outdoors and weather plays a major part in providing a
successful race for the kids. As we always hope for good weather, this is one aspect
out of our control and the race director may have to cancel the race if the conditions
turn dangerous. Many times, this is not determined until just before the start of the
race. If this unfortunate situation should occur, we cannot refund entry fees for the
race. Most of the race costs have already been spent before the first wave hits the
water (planning, equipment, emergency personnel, etc.). There may also be other
unforeseen circumstances that may result in race cancellations. We sincerely apologize
up front if a race needs to be cancelled as we continue to pursue organizing and
conducting safe and fun triathlons for our kids. Having said that, we will run the race in
the rain, if necessary.
