Youth Triathlon – IU-Bloomington
September 07, 2013, 9:00 AM (1st Wave Start)

REGISTRATION AND FEE:  Pre-registration should be completed through www.getmeregistered.com, or go to the link provided on www.kidstriforkids.com.  The pre-registration fee is $30, and day-of-event registration is $45. Field is limited to 200 individuals. Participants may register on the morning of the event, but it is recommended to register on-line prior to the event to avoid possible race morning delays.  On-line registration closes at midnight on Wednesday, September 4th.  The event may be cancelled, delayed or re-formatted due to dangerous situations such as weather or other unforeseen circumstances; there will be no refunds in such cases.

All participants must be a USAT member to compete. To facilitate registration, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that participants obtain USAT membership at Membership Services site for $15.

PROOF OF USAT MEMBERSHIP MUST BE PROVIDED AT PACKET PICKUP

RACE PACKET: participants can pick up their packets beginning at 7:30 AM on race morning of September 7th.   Registration and packet pick-up will be located at the outdoor pool.  Again, proof of USAT membership must be provided, or new membership paperwork will need to be completed.

LOCATION:  The IU outdoor pool is located at the corner of 17th Street and Fee Lane. Bloomington, IN 47408

PARKING:  Parking is available across the street in the Assembly Hall parking lot.  Please note that there will be IU field hockey competition going on that day, so parking in the lot between Armstrong and Hayes stadiums will be very congested.

TRANSITION AREAS: There will be two transition areas for this event.  Transition 1 is located just outside the north side gate of the outdoor pool.   Transition 2 is located at the Little 5 stadium (Bill Armstrong Stadium).  Kids should plan on making all changes (running/biking shoes, tee-shirts, number belt, etc) in transition #1.   Although there is an opportunity to place running shoes in Transition 2 for those using clipless pedal specific cycling shoes, it is recommended that kids bike and run in the same shoes (to avoid changing in transition #2).  If you choose to place items in transition #2, it is your responsibility to place a marked bag with your items in transition #2.

Click here for transition area maps.

PRE-RACE  MEETING:  A mandatory pre-race meeting for all participants and parents/guardians will take place at 8:30 AM in Transition 1.  The first wave will begin promptly at 9:00 AM.

RACE DISTANCES:  All distances are approximate. See posted course maps and descriptions at race site on race day for any changes to distances.  Note that there are essentially 2 distances.  Short for ages 7-10 and long for ages 11-14.

7-8 year olds and 9-10 year olds run the short course: 100 meter swim, 2 mile bike and 0.6 mile run.

11-12 year olds and 13-14 year olds run the long course: 200 meter swim, 3.7 mile bike and 1.0 mile run.

Click here for swim course maps.

COURSE MAPS AND DESCRIPTIONS:   The maps on the website are preliminary and may change.  Final course maps and descriptions will be posted at the race site on race day.  There are 2 courses within this race, one for younger kids (7-10) and one for older kids (11-14).  Much if it will be using the same layout, but will separate at certain points along the bike (2 loops for older kids instead of 1 loop) and on the run (older kids run an additional distance around the IU Track stadium).    Volunteers will help direct the kids, but please be aware of the separation points.  Younger kids (ages 7-10) will wear a colored bracelet to help volunteers.  Every year, we have one or two kids go off-course.  Please review these maps with your young racer.

START:  The first wave will start at 9:00 AM.  Each age-group wave will then start in waves according to the pre-determined time intervals.  Wave start times will be posted and available at registration/packet pickup.   The first wave will be the 13-14 year olds.  Subsequent waves will be filled in descending age order.   All wave starts are anticipated to finish by approximately 9:30.

BIKE ROUTE:  The bike begins out of transition 1 located south of the pool (grass area), and proceeds up Fee Lane and around North Jordan Ave.  The older kids riding the Long course (ages 11-14) will ride 2 loops around Jordan Ave and finish with 2 laps around the Little 5 track.  The younger kids riding the short course (ages 7-10) will only ride one Jordan loop and one Little 5 lap.  Transition 2 will be on the concrete just west of the Little 5 track entrance.  This course may be reversed, so pay attention the day of the event for possible changes.

Click here for bike route map.

RUN ROUTE:  The run will begin at Bill Armstrong stadium and run around the outside of the Little 5 track.  Younger kids (ages 7-10) will loop around the north end of the stadium and finish back at transition #2.  Older kids (ages 11-14) will run around the IU track stadium (Hayes Stadium) and then make their way back to transition #2 for the finish.

PRIZES:  Prizes/medals will be awarded to the top 3 finishers for each gender in every age group.  Finisher certificates will be awarded to all participants.
