We have reached out to GetMeRegistered to help us facilitate a refund, or if you prefer, possibly apply the paid registration fee to one of our upcoming four races. We are sorry to cancel, but we hope to see you at another race this season!
Kids TRI For Kids Triathlon/ Duathlon Greenfield Race Letter - 2024
RACE Date is Sunday, June 9 at 9:00 AM.
Overview
The Kids TRI for Kids - Greenfield event will consist of a Triathlon and a duathlon. 7-10 year-old athletes will do a 100 meter swim or a .5 mile run to start, a 1.7 mile bike and finish with a .6 mile run. The 11-14 year-old athletes will swim 200 meters or a .5 mile run to start, 3.4 mile bike and finish with a 1.2 mile run.
Below, you will find lots of important information pertaining to the race. Please take the time to review this information as it will make your experience (whether you are an athlete or a spectator) at the event much more enjoyable.
General Information
Location
Kathy Dowling Aquatic Center, 300 Apple Street, Greenfield, IN 46140 (often listed as Riley Pool on GPS maps like Google Maps)
USAT Membership
This race is sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the national governing body for triathlons. All athletes need to be registered through USAT. Youth memberships are $10.00 for the entire year. Please visit the USAT website – https://member.usatriathlon.org/login - to purchase your membership before the race. After you complete this process, you will be asked to print your temporary membership card. Please do so and bring this card with to race registration.
Parking
Vehicles are recommended to use the following options:
- Apple Street- street parking
- Parking lot- located next to Splash Pad and Patricia Elmore Center
Packet Pick-up & Registration
There will be day-of registration packet pickup that will open at 7:30 AM and conclude at 8:45 am. Packet Pick up and Registration will take place on the west side of the Kathy Dowling Aquatic Center near the entrance of the Patricia Elmore Center.
When athletes register, we will also body mark them - write their race number and age on their arms and legs with a Sharpie. Athletes need to be registered and checked in by 8:45 at the latest to be prepared for the pre-race meeting. Please don’t plan to arrive at 8:45 though. You and your athlete will need to be able to attend the meeting details, set up in the transition area and participate in the course preview parade. The best race experience will be if you have plenty of time to understand the course layout.
Pre-Race Meeting and Course Preview Parade
A mandatory race meeting for all participants and a parent/guardian will take place at 9:00 am. Racing will start immediately following the meeting, at approximately 9:30 am. Specific race start times will be available the day of the race.
Spectator Information
Please recognize that triathlon and duathlon are notoriously NOT a spectator friendly sport. We have designed the course to make it possible to see your athlete in each of the 3 sections and the finish, but please remember that it is not realistic to see your athlete throughout the whole race. Also, please remember that the reason we are here is for the athletes. We appreciate your respecting the volunteers who will be directing people throughout the event. Spectators need to be respectful of the athletes at all times as well and be cautious about moving in front of the athletes who are competing. All spectators should be able to view the swim, transitions, bike, run and finish without having to cross the racecourse.
No spectators are permitted in the transition area
You may be in the transition area to help get your athlete set up and organized, but once racing starts, the participants will be on their own and adults are not permitted to enter the racecourse or transition to help out. Once the racing is finished, the transition area will be opened and you will have plenty of time to load the bike into your car before the awards, if you so choose. The awards ceremony will take place as soon as possible after the final finisher.
Transition Information
Transition area
The transition area maps will be provided online and at registration. There will be large maps with course experts to help athletes and parents understand the courses. The transition area will be set up in the drop off circle for the pool and the first line of parking spaces. When selecting a spot and setting up your transition area, there are a few things to keep in mind: 1) Select the best rack for your bike. We will have spaces for hanging bikes, wooden wheel in racks and an area for kickstands. 2) Make your space small. We have many athletes that need to set up their equipment and space for everyone to travel in and out without roadblocks. 3) Alternate the direction of your bike. If participants alternate the direction that their bikes face, it will help maximize space. 4) Know the flow. Become familiar with where you enter transition from the swim or first run, where you exit and enter from the bike and where you exit for the final run.
Transition Time
This time will be counted towards your overall race time, though there is no time limit.
Course Marking/Volunteers
The bike and run course will be marked so the athletes will know what direction to go, but we will also have volunteers out on the course to help along the way.
DUATHLON -Run #1 Information
The FIRST run segment will take place on the same run loop as the final run loop. They will start at the Transition Run exit and run the loop all the way back to where the swimmers are entering the transition area. ALL DUATHLETES will run .5 mile. Once the DUATHLETES complete the first run and return to the transition area they will do the same Bike and Run course as listed for their age group.
Walking/Resting on the run course
Athletes may walk or stop to rest on the run course, but again this time will be counted towards their final time.
TRIATHLON -Swim Information
The athletes will start in the Southwest corner of the pool and will swim a lap around the edge of the pool until the exit point. The 11-14 year-old triathletes will then swim a second loop around the edge of the pool

Bike Information for All Athletes
Bike Course
Athletes will walk/run with their bike out of the transition area to the bike mounting area. Once on the bike, athletes will ride out onto the access road to the intersection of Apple St and the US 40 bike lane. At the first intersection, the rider will head down a sidewalk ramp onto the bike lane going West on US 40 (the police will be stationed here to help direct riders) Riders need to stay to the right of the cones/barriers through this section. Riders will turn right on Lincoln St (the entrance to Riley Park. They will veer left towards the tennis courts and then return to Lincoln St. Riders will stay to the left and follow Lincoln through the park. They will veer left on the turn circle and follow Lincoln Street to the Boys and Girls Club of Hancock County where they will turn right on Baldwin St. They will follow Baldwin to the Parks Dept access road and turn right. They will follow that to the turnaround point. When coming back to Baldwin St, riders will turn left on Baldwin and then cut through the Boys and Girls Club parking lot before returning to Lincoln St. They will follow Lincoln St back towards the park entrance where they will turn LEFT after the skate park and basketball courts. They will continue towards the playground via a BRIDGE. Riders will need to go SLOW ON THIS BRIDGE! Riders will turn left after the bridge and follow the path back the start point. The park road (Lincoln St) will be totally closed to car traffic. Baldwin St will be open but will have police presence. The 7–10 year-olds will complete one loop while the 11-14 year-olds will complete two laps. Athletes are responsible for counting their own laps. After the athlete has completed the bike leg of the triathlon, they will then dismount the bike and walk/run it back into the bike to run transition area.
Bike Safety
The bike course is mainly a closed course in that no vehicles will be traveling on any of the course’s roads (except a small part of Baldwin St where police will be stationed). Off Duty Police Officers and Volunteers will be stationed along the course and at all major turns.
Helmet
YES!!!! This rule is strictly enforced by both the USAT and the race organizers. This is one of three ways to be disqualified by not wearing a helmet. You MUST wear a helmet correctly and the chinstrap must be buckled ANYTIME you are on your bike. We have had athletes put their helmets on backwards. For safety, athletes need to wear their helmets properly and we will stop any racers who are not wearing their helmet correctly. This includes before, during, and after the race. If you are riding your bike from your car to the transition area, you MUST have your helmet properly on and buckled. Same for after the race. Parents, you too! Set a good example! You might be disqualified if you do not properly wear a helmet! You are responsible for providing your own helmet.
Bike Equipment
In keeping with USAT regulations for all youth races, NO AEROBARS OR AERODYNAMIC HELMETS are permitted. These result in automatic disqualification.
“Fat-Tire” Bikes
Yes. Fat tire bikes are allowed at this race.
Bike Selection
Bike selection is a personal thing. Any kind of bike can be used, as long as it meets safety requirements, but no training wheels are allowed. It must be in working order, and handlebar ends must be plugged. A volunteer will be checking bikes when you enter the transition area to ensure that your bar ends are plugged.
Kickstand
Bike racks will be provided. Athletes will have the option of using a bike rack or a kickstand. Athletes who have kickstands must position their bikes in the kickstand area of the transition area.
Run Information
Run Course
The run segment will be an out and back section to the 4H Fairgrounds Auxiliary Parking lot. The 7-10 Age Group will run one .5 mile lap while the 11-14 Age Group will run two laps for a total of 1.0 miles. A water station will be available as they exit transition where the second lap starts.
You must wear your bib number on the front for the run.
Walking/Resting on the run course

Additional Information
Water/Aid Stations
Water/ aid station will be located immediately after you exit the transition area on the run. At the finish, all athletes will receive a yummy snack and there will be water available. There will be certified First-Aid/CPR personnel available throughout the competition.
Weather
If there is thunder or lightning at the start of the race, we will delay for 30 minutes from the last lightning strike. If thunder or lightning occurs in the middle of the race, the event is immediately canceled. Athletes will be pulled from the course and told to return to transition to find their parents. If the race is canceled there will be no refunds.
